International Conference on the Philosophy of Criminal Punishment

“International Conference on the Philosophy of Criminal Punishment” was held from June 18 to 20. The three-day conference was organized by the Department of Philosophy and co-organized by Chung Chi College and New Asia College.

Fourteen papers were presented in the conference on the following three themes:

  1. Why Punish? How Much?
  2. Punishment and Social Justice
  3. Should the Death Penalty be Abolished or Implemented?

Prof. Erin Kelly from Tuft University; Prof. T. M. Scanlon, Alford Professor of Natural Religion, Moral Philosophy, and Civil Polity at Harvard University; and Prof. Tommie Shelby, Professor of African and African American Studies and of Philosophy at Harvard University, were the keynote speakers. Other attendees were academics from Hong Kong as well as Belgium, Israel, Taiwan and the United States.
