Description:

Physical education and activity have been linked to health and longevity since ancient times. In the 21st century, three modern trends, namely, the epidemic of obesity, inactivity in children, and ageing population, increase the prevalence of chronic diseases. The lecture attempts to examine the role of physical education (PE) courses offered in schools in Hong Kong and its implication to the professional development of PE teachers.

In accordance with the global trend in PE, the Hong Kong government has initiated a series of curriculum reforms over the past decades. First, PE was introduced as one of the eight key learning areas in school curricula, along with Chinese Language; English Language; Mathematics; Technology; Science; Personal, Social, and Humanities; and Arts Education. Second, the new PE curriculum focuses on the promotion of the active, healthy lifestyle of students as well as on the active learning of generic skills through physical activity. Looking back at the traditional skill-based and teacher-centered training format for PE teachers, a contemporary student-centered and integrated teaching approach is timely recommended.
