Do Your Part for CUHK

The Chinese University has much to look forward to in 2013, the year when its students, staff and alumni will rally to celebrate its 50th anniversary.

Like many graduates in the 1970s, I have witnessed the growth of CUHK from its humble origin on the barren hills in Shatin to a modern comprehensive university whose verdant campus is universally admired. Firmly embracing the vision and educational ideals of its founding scholars, the University has ridden out numerous hardships and challenges to develop into a reputable seat of higher learning today, bringing pride and satisfaction to alumni like myself.

Rome was not built in one day. Neither was it built by a single bricklayer. Generations of students, teachers, staff, alumni, friends and partners of the University have each done their parts in laying and consolidating the bedrock of the Chinese University family. The Golden Jubilee year is an appropriate time for all of us to come together and share the joy and honour of being part of this family. It is also an opportune time for us to renew our efforts to propel the University further into the future.

I feel deeply honoured to be entrusted to lead the Organizing Committee for the celebratory activities in 2013. The series of lectures and conferences, territory-wide roadshows, special commemorative events and social services activities will commence from 1 January and last throughout 2013.

On behalf of the CUHK 50th Anniversary Celebration Organizing Committee, I would like to thank all those who have given us their valuable advice and help, especially members of the other committees with specific tasks. I look forward to receiving views and opinions from all members of the Chinese University family to make the Golden Jubilee celebrations truly remarkable and enjoyable by all. I count on every one of you for the continued support of the celebratory activities. I call upon you to do your essential part to build upon our heritage and achievements of the past so as to empower the development of the University in its next thriving phase.
